Rock Spur is rooted in a single estate vineyard in Melba, Idaho, where every wine begins. For us, the vineyard is not simply the source of the fruit. It is the foundation of the entire project, guided by a hands-on approach and a long-term commitment to quality.
Planted on 20 acres, the vineyard is farmed with intention across every block. From irrigation strategy to canopy management, vine balance, and fruit development, each decision is made with quality in mind. That level of control allows us to deliver better fruit to the winery and, ultimately, craft wines that reflect our land with distinction.
A place shaped by geology
The character of our vineyard starts in the soil. Beneath a shallow top layer, the site is defined by rocky, sandy, lava-influenced soils created by the volcanic history of the Melba area and the broader flood- and sediment-driven landscape of the Western Snake River Plain. Our land traces back to Bonneville Flood deposits and a volcanic vent at the southern end of the vineyard, where lava emerged underwater and helped form the gravel bar and lava sands that define the site today.
Those soils are central to the vineyard’s identity, contributing to the wines’ structure, character, and strong sense of place.
Rock Spur is in the Snake River Valley AVA, a region that continues to establish itself as one of the Northwest’s most promising places to grow wine grapes. For us, that means more than simply growing fruit in Idaho. It means working from a site with real potential and approaching it with the same care and ambition found in more established wine regions.
Idaho is still a young and evolving wine region, which is part of what makes it exciting. There is room here to push for quality, deepen our understanding of the land over time, and contribute to the growing conversation around what Idaho wine can be at its best.
